What we actually find in Halifax
Gritstone, gradients and listed elevations
Halifax housing is gritstone, and gritstone means solid wall. Back-to-backs and top-and-bottom hillside dwellings — where one address enters at street level and another below it from the slope behind — are common, and neither offers the tidy rear access an engineer would like. Nothing can be hidden in a cavity, so pipework runs externally on stone that is often listed: Calderdale has well over two thousand listed buildings, conservation area coverage takes in the town centre and Skircoat Green, and local-stone requirements are enforced in historic streets. The gradients compound it. A condenser on a hillside elevation is visible from half the valley, which affects both what is acceptable and how we reach it. Plateau-edge semis and modern estates are the straightforward exception.
Mill conversions, offices and hospitality
Commercially Halifax runs on offices and converted mills. Lloyds Banking Group occupies the former Halifax Building Society headquarters, Covéa Insurance sits at Dean Clough, and Dean Clough itself holds around a hundred and fifty businesses across sixteen Victorian mill buildings — hotels, gyms, bars, restaurants, galleries and theatre companies. Nestlé has made Quality Street at Albion Mills for over eighty years. Mill space is the interesting servicing problem: enormous volumes, single-glazed roof lights, thick stone that holds cold in winter and heat once it finally warms, and plant threaded through structures never designed for it. The M62 run and Pennine cold
Halifax is the longest journey we make from Bilsthorpe — around an hour and a half by the A1(M) and M62, a genuine cross-Pennine trip — so work here is scheduled as full visits rather than quick calls. The moors above the town reach roughly fifteen hundred feet and the valleys are deeply cut, which makes it high, wet and cold by English standards. Heating load dominates the year, and where systems run as heat pumps that means defrost cycles, iced bases and drain paths that need to stay clear. Cooling demand concentrates in commercial space, mill conversions and top-floor rooms under a slate roof.

Refrigerant work must be done by an F-Gas certified engineer — it's illegal to buy refrigerant or attempt this yourself.
R22 systems (pre-2010) can't legally be recharged — virgin R22 is banned. We'll advise on reclaimed-gas repair, conversion, or replacement.
Lost charge on a fairly new system (2–5 yrs)? It's often an installation defect that may be covered under the installer's workmanship warranty — we'll help you check first.

Our system does far more heating than cooling up here — does that change the servicing? +
It's normal in Calderdale and it changes what a service should concentrate on. A system spending most of the year in heating mode works the outdoor coil hard in cold, damp air, so defrost operation, the drain path beneath the unit and the condition of the base and mountings matter more than they would in a Lincolnshire summer. Ice building under a condenser and refreezing is a common cause of damage up here. We'd rather see Halifax systems serviced in early autumn than in June, so any fault is found before the weather turns. Filters, coil cleaning and electrical checks are the same either way, and performance is confirmed by temperature split.

A multi-split service is £164 + VAT (£196.80 including VAT), which covers up to 2 indoor units. Each additional indoor unit is £45 + VAT (£54 including VAT). We'll confirm the exact total based on how many indoor units your system has before any work begins.
What's the difference between a single-split and multi-split system? +
A single-split has one indoor unit connected to one outdoor unit. A multi-split connects several indoor units to one outdoor unit, so it cools multiple rooms. Multi-splits take longer to service because every indoor unit is checked and cleaned — which is why they're priced a little higher.
Do you service all makes and models? +
Yes. We are approved service & installation partners for Daikin, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Samsung, Hisense, Midea and Bosch, and our F-Gas registered engineers also service all other major brands — Panasonic, LG, Toshiba and more — whether or not we installed the system originally.
